As I understand, the visible light from an optical telescope is focused on a sensor which correlates light exposure to an electrical voltage, which is then converted to an image. A single antenna radio telescope's signal is focused on some sort a sensor but this signal represents only a single 'pixel.'

Some of the techniques that are used for this type of study are reflecting telescopes or refracting telescopes. Radio telescopes are much larger than optical telescopes because radio wavelengths are much longer than optical wavelengths. The longer wavelengths means that the radio waves have lower energy than optical light waves. In order to collect enough radio photons to detect a signal, the radio dishes must be very large. The telescope is more a discovery of optical craftsmen than an invention of a scientist.
